17 June, 2019Caroline Marks: The Rookie
11 July, 2019Filipe Toledo and Sally Fitzgibbons have won the 2019 Oi Rio Pro at Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in what is the 5th event of the year. The men’s quarterfinals had two amazing heats comprised by Filipe Toledo against Frederico Morais and Jordy Smith against Kolohe Andino. The final was between Toledo and Smith from South Africa and the Brazilian ended up winning it. On the women’s side Sally Fitzgibbons met also Australian Keely Andrew and then Carissa Moore against Stephanie Gilmore. Once again we saw Carissa Moore on a final this season but her results weren’t enough to beat an amazing and powerful Sally Fitzgibbons.
With this result of the 5th event of the 2019 season, Filipe Toledo climbs 3 positions to end up 3rd in the ranking while Sally Fitsgibbons also climbs another 3 positions to get to 1st position. Carissa Moore, who hasn’t won a single event but has been among the best 4 in several occassions is second at only 1,400 points aprox. from the 1st position. Kolohe Andino from the US is second on the men’s rankings at 5 thousand points from JJ Florence who is currently number 1.
This means that the women’s ranking is much tighter than men’s so it will be even more thrilling for all of us to see how the next event finishes: The Corona Open J-Bay, in South Africa which is due for July 9-22. Want to become the next Fitzgibbons? Come and learn to surf in Tenerife.
