Tyler Wright wins the 2017 Surfing World Title

Tyler Wright: 2017 Surfing Champion

Happy new year and congratulations to Tyler Wright, our new 2017 female champion of the woooooorld ! And as we posted before, Women’s title was even tighter than men ! As we said back in the day and before the last contest Maui’s Women Pro, Sally FitzgibbonsTyler WrightCourtney ConlogueCarissa Moore and Stephanie Gilmore were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively. The difference between Gilmore and Fitzgibbons was only 7 thousand points aproximately. So what happened? There was a surprise in Round 2 as said by surfer.com:

“The biggest shock came yesterday, when World No.1 Sally Fitzgibbons was beaten in Round Two by Brisa Hennessy. The next closest challenger to Wright, Courtney Conlogue, had the chance to win her first title if she finished third in the event and ahead of Wright, but the Californian fell to Nikki van Dijk in Round Four, dropping her out of contention. All of a sudden, as Wright was warming up for her Quarterfinal, no other name mattered in the title race. Not Stephanie Gilmore. Not Carissa Moore. The championship was Wright’s if she beat Hennessy. ”

Oh and she did, take a look at the video below:

But then she couldn’t beat Gilmore on the Semifinals but it didn’t matter, she already had more points to hold on to.

Maui Women’s Pro Final Results:
1 – Stephanie Gilmore (AUS)
2 – Malia Manuel (HAW)
