Yes, here it is again, the 2018 World Surf League Championship starts a new season at the Quicksilver PRO Gold Coast , and the Roxy PRO Gold Coast (Women). This edition counts with new names as Michael February, of whom we spoke about in this article of 2017: South Africa’s rising surfing star. And this edition has started with a surprise: Mikey Wright has eliminated 2x Champion of the World John John Florence. Two decades have past since the last time a reigning champion got eliminated on Round 2. This is a shock for him and for all of his fans, but this has only started, and there is plenty of championship to go.
The World Surf League describes this with these words: “While Wright may have been characteristically low-key after his feat, he had a significant cheering squad on hand to cheer him on. His sister, 2x World Champ Tyler Wright and brother, men’s CT surfer Owen Wright, were both in the athlete area, anxiously watching the battle. Plus, Wright had an important furry guest, too — his dog Bacon, who somehow managed to score a VIP pass”. The Wright family, at least brother and sister, all PRO surfers, were there to push him towards victory, and so he did. Now he had to wait for Round 3 on Thursday, so let’s see what happens.
Will there be any other surprises in this event? Who will end up winning men’s and women’s first surfing contest to start the season as the strongest contender? Can’t wait to see. Become the next surfing champion of the world by taking some begginer lessons at Atlantik Surf.
