La World Surf League tiene una sección muy especial: Big Waves Awards, los premios a las olas grandes. En estos premios del surf más grande no solo se elige la mejor gran ola surfeada de la temporada, también se premia la mejor cabalgada, el mejor tubo o el mejor WipeOut, por ejemplo. Este año Ian Walsh se ha llevado dos de los premios gracias aun gran swell que llegó a Hawai nada más empezar el año. Él mismo nos cuenta la hazaña de marcarse un 10 en Pe’ahi. También os dejo el resto de ganadores, sobre todo no os perdáis como Andrew Cotton sale volando por los aires en el wipeout del año.

Durante la competición de Pe’ahi Masters a principios de Enero de este año Ian Walsh estaba en el sitio en una de las mejores series de la manga. Ya se había visto un 10 en el campeonato y el segundo iba a llegar en menos de un minuto. La bajada fue increíble y la línea que trazó fue perfecta. El mismo reconoce que sentía deformarse la cera bajo sus pies mientras apretaba en canto sobre la ola para agarrarse a la pared. Aquí tenéis la experiencia contada por él mismo:

También en Pe’ahi pero esta vez a finales de octubre del año pasado en uno de los primero swells de olas grandes que llegaban a Hawai Ian se coló en un tubo que iba a ser el mejor del año. Desde luego tan profundo o más del que se marcaría luego en enero.

Don’t know where to start…. I sincerely appreciate all the kind words and support from all over the world. Thank you all so much! • That was an incredible couple days of surfing and really fun to be a part of. Congratulations to @paigealms for her back to back wins, and every other surfer in the event for putting on an inspiring level of surfing and continuing the progression of our sport. • So much more goes into riding waves on those types of days then just being in the lineup. This accomplishment was entirely a WE effort. There are a ton of people I want to thank, so i’m just going hit a few here and the rest all know who you are… I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to surf in the #PeahiChallenge @wsl, the entire safety team for the contest and every single one of the guys that are out there swell after swell keeping all the surfer’s heads above water @globalaquaticsllc, @deep2peak thanks for keeping our bodies together / tuned up, my family / friends for the patience and always sturdy support system (Mom & Dad’s traditional home made pre-jaws dinner for @shanedorian, @gerglong & I was beyond clutch), @chris_christenson73 and his entire team for the boards and tireless work refining them, thanks to all of my sponsors, @ashbax808 for all the support & buttoning up the disaster of a house we left behind while prepping, @micah_nickens for the help with how to tie a leash on, @dklegend @shaunwalsh20 and the boys on our support boat and skis for the long days & 2am wake up calls, @lukewalsh44 for the caddy support and soaking up every minute of each day with me, the broadcast & event team, everyone that tuned in from around the world and lastly but certainly not least all the surfers that have come before us, the surfers of right now, and the next generation that will surely take this sport to unprecedented heights… PS: Last night was on fire.
