Rip Curl’s Padang Padang is coming

Just as the World Surf League announces, the countdown for Rip Curl’s Padang Padang Championship in one of the best breaks in Indonesia (Bali) is about to start. It’s due for the 10th July-10th August and the final and complete surfer line up will be published on June 26, in 4 days.

First of all, where is this? Well as Bali-Indonesia correctly describes : “Padang Padang Beach, locally referred to as Pantai Labuan Sait, is one of Bali’s most famous surf spots, located on the north-western coast of the island’s Bukit Peninsula, and just a kilometre southwest of the Anantara Bali Uluwatu. This beach features an exotic setting; a simply stunning one hundred meter-long stretch of sand that is accessible down a flight of stairs through a unique hollow rock entrance. The surf has a steady set of barrels during good weather, attracting wave riders from around the world.”

The good thing about this beach as I saw myself back in 2014 is that it’s also a normal beach where locals and tourists go to have a good swim and get sun-tanned. But from the sand if you look at the horizon you will see huge waves that come in natural lines that are just amazing to watch. Take a look at the picture from El Kabrón. Honestly as I went in October 2014, there weren’t huge waves but it seems Padang Padang will be huge this year 2017 in Summer time. Swells are changing rapidly and according to some local surfers they’ve had bigger waves this June that in the whole 2016.

“We’ve had more big swells in the first two months of this season than we had all last year,” said local Bali surfer and 2014 Rip Curl Cup champion Garut Widiarta. “It feels like Padang has been breaking non-stop. Hopefully this means we’re in for a special swell at Padang for the Rip Curl Cup this year.”

We’ll talk about the final results and scores when it finishes. If you want to see somethign spectaular, buy your tickets to Bali right now, but before that, perhaps you should take some Surfing Lesssons in Tenerife.
