All who have stayed enough time in the Islands know that between the islands there is an extraordinary assemblage of open-ocean species, especially the short finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus)<\/em>, tortoises, sharks and dolphins. According to Mission Blue<\/a>, more than 700,000 visitors travel each year from every corner in the world to whale and bird watch, SCUBA dive and hike along the islands’ spectacular cliffs and nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As explained by Mission Blue, ‘ These waters span several preexisting protected areas, or Special Areas of Conservation, such as the SAC Teno-Rasca in Tenerife, and in La Gomera SAC Santiago-Valle Gran Rey and SAC Los Organos. However, the islands still experience threats from habitat degradation from coastal construction, plastic and waste pollution, shipping traffic, and the negative effects of climate change, which include rising sea levels and increasing sea water temperatures<\/em>. ‘<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mission Blue has declared the space between Tenerife and La Gomera a Hope Spot to protect even more the area, and especially because IUCN’s aim is to have 30% of the ocean officially protected by 2030. But this action is also intended to inspire the Spanish Government to declare a Marine Protected Area in the waters of Canary Islands, and especially the spot between La Gomera and Tenerife, a pole for conservation, sustainable tourism and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here at Atlantik Surf<\/a> we wanted to highlight this initiative that we think is good for all our species, waters and environment. As surfers we do like to see clear waters and we do like to see that there are still some species under our surfing boards, we wouldn’t like to be alone in the water, we must protect the species of the Canary Islands. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
