{"id":7209,"date":"2018-03-13T12:04:33","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T12:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantiksurf.com\/en\/?p=7209"},"modified":"2018-03-13T12:04:33","modified_gmt":"2018-03-13T12:04:33","slug":"the-2018-wsl-championship-is-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantiksurf.com\/en\/the-2018-wsl-championship-is-back\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2018 WSL Championship is back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, here it is again, the <strong>2018 World Surf League Championship<\/strong> starts a new season at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldsurfleague.com\/events\/2018\/mct\/2647\/quiksilver-pro-gold-coast\">Quicksilver PRO Gold Coast<\/a>\u00a0, and the Roxy PRO Gold Coast (Women). This edition counts with new names as Michael February, of whom we spoke about in <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantiksurf.com\/en\/mikey-february-south-africas-rising-surfing-star\/\">this article of 2017:\u00a0<\/a> South Africa&#8217;s rising surfing star. And this edition has started with a surprise: Mikey Wright has eliminated 2x Champion of the World John John Florence. Two decades have past since the last time a reigning champion got eliminated on Round 2. This is a shock for him and for all of his fans, but this has only started, and there is plenty of championship to go.<\/p>\n<p>The World Surf League describes this with these words: &#8220;While Wright may have been characteristically low-key after his feat, he had a significant cheering squad on hand to cheer him on. His <strong>sister<\/strong>, <strong>2x World Champ Tyler Wright<\/strong> and brother, men&#8217;s CT surfer <strong>Owen Wright<\/strong>, were both in the athlete area, anxiously watching the battle. Plus, Wright had an important furry guest, too &#8212; his dog Bacon, who somehow managed to score a VIP pass&#8221;. The Wright family, at least brother and sister, all PRO surfers, were there to push him towards victory, and so he did. Now he had to wait for Round 3 on Thursday, so let&#8217;s see what happens.<\/p>\n<p>Will there be any other surprises in this event? Who will end up winning men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s first surfing contest to start the season as the strongest contender? Can&#8217;t wait to see.
