And he did it again !

Filipe Toledo

Filipe Toledo (Brazil) won the Corona Open J-Bay on Thursday afternoon for the second year in a row. He made 5 of the 10 highest heat totals. Julian Wilson made it to the Quarterfinals and so he loses the number 1 ranking in the WSL. The news is that Wade Carmichael, a rookie, got to the final again ! But Toledo has never lost a final, never ! But this one was very tough, Carmichael put up a solid fight and Toledo admitted he was as tired as ever:

“To be honest, I’m so tired right now,” he said after his win. “I was trying so hard to push through that heat but there were a few times that I just had to stop for a minute. I have so many crazy emotions. I feel like it’s my turn now. Everything is clicking and feeling good. At this point I’ll do whatever it takes to win the heat, whether that’s running on the rocks or breaking my board. My plan was to come here and come out on top and I’m glad I was able to do that.”

Toledo had to fight against Japanese Kanoa Igarashi in the semifinals, who according to many viewers, he surfed better than ever this time, but it wasn’t enough to beat a beaming Toledo who seems to be in the best possible shape.

So now Toledo has 35,900 points, 4 thousand points ahead of N2, Julian Wilson. Wade Carmichael went up 8 positions to sleep 6th in the ranking tonight ! And where to now? Now we have to go to Teahupoo in French Polynesia, precisely where N8 is from, Michel Bourez, who knows Teahupoo as his home! Let’s see what happens in one of the strongest waves of the tournament.
