As with other sports, surfing has rising stars, kids that many have been seeing since a couple of years, and when you realize they have won several tournaments and championships, rising as the country’s new super star. This is the case of Mikey February and South Africa. He is on a dream run this season. He was making the Round of 48 in the QS 10,000 just until two weeks ago when he suddenly reached the Ballito Pro Billabong’s Semifinal, where he lost against the champion Jordy Smith, and that is something huge for an upcomer, the rising surfing star from South Africa, Cape Town. After this great achievement, he shot 17 spots up the Qualifying Series rankings to No. 4 ! and the Deputy Commissioner Travis Logie awarded him with the WSL wildcard for the Coropa Open Jbay.
Plenty of people and even professional surfers saw a kid surfing at Muizenberg (Cape Town) several years ago and perhaps many of them already realized that he was going to become a Champion. In 2011, at the age of 18, Mikey was 487th on the QS rankings, and today he is 4th. For this to happen, he started surfing all kind of waves in South Africa, trying bigger and more dangerous waves as he got older. Mikey February has all he needs to become number 1, will he achieve it ?
