When did surf appear in Spain? Who were the first surfers in Spain? These a questiones that don’t have scientific or proved answers, although from what we can investigate it seems surf came to Spain between 1963 and 1965 in several places of Spain at the same time: Asturias (1963), Cádiz (1964), Guipúzcoa (1964), Vizcaya (1964) and Cantabria (1965). It seems certain that surf also came and was regularly practiced in the Canary Islands since 1968.

In 1970, Pepe Almoguera created his own surfboard in Pedregalejo (Málaga). Then, several kids from the area joined this new initiative: Francisco Soria, Javier Gabernet, Rafael García, Carlos Sauco, Pepi Almoguera, the brothers Toño and Paco Gutiérrez Espejo, Joaquín Fernández-de las Alas, and several others that in 1974 created the first active Surfing club in the Mediterranean: The Málaga Surfing Club.

In 1973, islanders from Gran Canaria created the first surfing club in the archipelago: the Guanarteme Club and recently, the German magazine Airberlin Magazin compared the Canary Islands with Hawaii.

Then, surfers and entrepeneurs saw a business in teaching people how to surf, and they were absolutely right. In 1991, two surfing schools opened in Spain. One is the Escuela Cántabra de Surf and the other one is Zarauzko Surf Eskola, the latter was disolved in 2016.
