An emotional Las Américas PRO Tenerife

Mikaela Greene and Rubén Vitoria

Las Américas PRO Tenerife, which ended a couple of days ago, awarded Rubén Vitoria (EUK) and Mikaela Greene (AUS) as the 2018 edition winners of this Qualifying Series tournament in the Canaries, an archipelago that has returned to professional surf after several years without it.

During the first day, a total of 112 surfers from 21 different countries were present and ready to compete. 48 of them were Spanish. Te truth is that there were very little waves and quite short ones too. Normally organizers know when to celebrate the competition according to swells and waves, but this time, as all forecasting in the Canaries, everything went wrong because it is very difficult to tell.

The Men’s final was between Ruben Vitoria and Jorgann Couzinet. Ruben ended up the heat with an amazing 19.10 in a very disputed final in which both contenders gave everything.

Women’s final confronted European Champion Pauline Ado and Australian Mikaela Greene, undisputable best surfers of the tournament. They had to see each other in the final. And what a fight. This is what the winnner said: “I have a lot of respect for Pauline as an athlete so I knew I had a tough heat ahead of me and I had to bring my A-Game,” she said. “I’m really happy I was able to find a few waves and stoked the waves stuck around for the finals. I have a couple of big events at home coming up so I’ll definitely take some confidence out of this win and try to carry it into the next few events.”
